Program Note
The bittersweet words of In May by Paul Laurence Dunbar evoke the longing for a lost love, despite the beautiful imagery of springtime. The music is composed to capture both of these ideals, balancing love and loss. Dunbar, a native of Dayton, Ohio, has cemented a legacy of excellence, being one of the first African American poets to gain widespread acclaim during his lifetime.
