Program Note
I am deeply fascinated by why humans believe—whether in religion, spirituality, values, morals, or the whole smorgasbord in between. My curiosity stems from my own evolving experiences as I’ve grown into who I am today.
– From the composer
Through my reflections on belief systems, I’ve realized I can’t place myself neatly on any point along the continuum between deep spirituality and complete skepticism. It’s been intellectual fodder—an endless attempt to understand our purpose and what lies beyond this life—but I often find myself teetering between inherited beliefs and personal questioning.
The rebel in me has always chosen to challenge assumptions and what’s commonly accepted as dogma. What if no one is right? What if religion, society, and everything we know are simply products of human decisions, hearsay, mistranslation, conspiracy, or control?
Yet, I also feel a deep connection to life, the human condition, and our planet. I’m equally captivated by the “higher powers” and unexplainable phenomena that fuel my curiosity about what truly governs the universe.
To explore these dichotomies, I wrote Things Invisible—its title excerpted from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Book III: “Of things invisible to mortal sight.” The first movement, Unto Light, embodies the reverent and spiritual side of my experiences with belief. The second, The Jest, offers a farcical juxtaposition—absurd, jagged, and driving.
My hope is that you, too, can find beauty in the uncertainty of it all. As I continue to evolve, I’m learning to find contentment in the knowledge of not knowing.
