Program Note
This piece was written as a compositional exercise utilizing the pitches from a randomly chosen scale, which is called the “dyritonic” scale. This scale consists of the following pitches: C, Db, Eb, Gb, and Bb. The composer was challenged to primarily use these pitches to create a piece that was still engaging and pleasing to listen to.
The result was an off-kilter, and wonky sound that sounded otherworldly, but calming. That’s how “Lullaby on Venus” was chosen as its name. The instrumentation of the trio was chosen based on the composer’s primary and favorite instruments.
